3.14.12 My Crystal Ball
Let’s cut to the question on everyone’s mind…when will Mount Snow close? Before we go there, you need to know I feel extremely uncomfortable even talking about this subject on this forum. But in the spirit of our TRUTH IN SNOW REPORTING quest, let’s do it. Our goal is April 8, Easter Sunday. And up until this week I was feeling pretty confident about that date. But with weather records breaking daily, I have to give you a realistic update.
A crystal ball would come in handy right now. As we have all experienced, anything could happen but I have accepted the fact that we may not get another big snowstorm and we may close earlier than April 8.
Here’s the facts. There is still plenty of skiing on all 4 mountain faces, on 54 trails. We made more snow this year than last year and the year before that. Who would have known how important that would be? My skiing experience today was very good. 7 out of 10. The snow surface is typical spring conditions with the firmer snow in the morning and corn and mashed potatoes as the day warms up. But let’s face it, it has been warm up here in the mountains and most of the natural snow trails like Overbrook, Uncle’s and One More Time have closed.
If we get a cold snap or a snowstorm, I think we may make it. If the current weather pattern continues, we will see an earlier closing date. Many of you watch the weather and know that the long term forecast (through 3/25) is calling for more of what we are experiencing now. Let’s hope the forecast is wrong.
Our biggest and best events are planned for the upcoming weeks, including Reggaefest and the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge. We are also looking forward to our British school groups and the Professional Ski Instructors of America in the coming weeks. As you can see, we have a lot to stay open for.
In the end, it is entirely up to Mother Nature and you. If the weather cooperates and our snow holds, we will make it. And if you keep coming we will do everything possible to keep skiing and riding. I will keep you posted right here.
In the meantime, we have a 2-day St. Patty’s Party to throw for you and I for one prefer my pint of beer after a sun-drenched day of skiing. The kind of day when my thighs are aching from excessive laps and I have earned my libation. And it is always nice when you don’t have to wear a down parka and hand warmers just to enjoy a beer on the deck.
Here is the best advice I can give you.
If you love spring skiing, get here!
If you are searching for the best freestyle terrain in New England, get here!
If you seriously need a goggle tan, get here!
If you were tempted to put on the AC this week, get here!
If you are not ready for summer and weekends spent mowing the lawn, get here because the season may end a little earlier than we all had planned.
If none of the above describe you, get here anyways. Days like these are addicting. Once you experience spring skiing like this, you’ll become a believer. Just get here!
I will close this blog with my pics of today’s outing….just in case you don’t really believe that there is still plenty of snow in VT. I went out at 11 am and had a ball. It was a little colder last night and today so my skis were running fast.
Get here!

That’s about as realistic as you can get. After finishing up last Sunday and checking out the week’s forecast, I said to myself “There’s no way this mountain is going to make it to April 8th”
Thanks for the honesty Kelly and everything you guys have done this season. I’ll be up there tonight, trying to get in my 30 days this season!
Kelly- Great update- I cant believe there is already talk of end of season- The past few weeks have been great! Your team has had that mountain in unbelievable shape given how little snow there has been. It was great to spend time on Hop,shootout and and OMT while they were open! Hopefully Mothernature gives us an end of march treat and we can extend the season a bit…but thanks for a great season! also- Loved the passholders race tracks last week and thanks for the Hotdogs!! c u on the slopes!
Hi Kelly,
I was up yesterday. Is Jaws closed for good (because of no snow) or are you trying to preserve it?
Just wondering.
thanks
Bobby, it’s most likely closed for good.
Dang! I was afraid of that! Oh well. Thanks for the update Dan.
I, along with all my friends, really appreciate the honesty and frequent updates. The entire Mt Snow team has been fantastic this year, and made the most out of what little Mother Nature contributed. Also, Kudos to David “Longname” of your instructor team. My daughters have benefited from his talent and wisdom tremendously. They have come to love the sport, and that is in large part due to Dave developing their skills. Season Ticketholder weekend was great! We hope to get up one more time, but if not, we look forward to returning next year!!!
What are you going to do about the Gladiator is you close early????
Also will you stay open sat 7 and close that day instead of trying to stay open 1 day later if you could cuz i dont really want to get my money back from the competition (already Payed)
If we close prior to the Gladeiator, any entry fees would be refunded in full. We have no plans to move any end of season events. If we close early, events scheduled for that time period would not take place. The only reason for this is our event calendar is FULL now through closing day so there is no room to move. Let’s hope this weather changes and we can make it until then.
Thanks Tim and I appreciate you taking time to recognize Dave. We know which Dave you are talking about and will pass on your comments.
Solid honesty at its best. Just got back from Utah and it’s bad all over. Some of those resorts could use your candor. That’s probably little consolation right now, but thanks for being real. You’re a great model for the industry.
Thanks TCH. Being real is so much easier than faking it…but sometimes it gets you in trouble!
Went up on Thursday and Ripcord was a blast! Did it about 10x!! Seems I can always find somehting fun to ski up on the hill… I’ll be there on Sunday; hopefully I can find somthing else.
This season has been a disaster. All of the mountains in VT have done an OUTSTANDING job of giving us skiers reasons to hit the hill. Thanks VT and this MA resident will continue to support you.
Kelly,
Your honesty is so refreshing! I met you earlier in the year and told you that but it can’t be understated. I’m always telling my kids that honesty is the best policy so it’s nice to see an adult who follows that!
Thanks again,
Chuck
Kelly,
Is there a forecasted close date?
Thanks!
Hi Lori, we’re aiming for April 8 but of course it all depends on what Mother Nature has in store for us!
Will the brewfest happen even if the mt is closed? And can we do some hiking if it is?
If we close, Brewers Festival would be cancelled. You can hike the mountain any time!
My guess this weekend is when we will see Mt. Snow’s early season decision to focus snowblowing rather than spread it out really pay off. I bet we have some trails that are really skiable while other resorts are basically toast. Keeping fingers crossed. Gonna be hot out there. Thanks for a great year. SNow may have been weak, but moderate temps meant kids had aweeeesome days to ski.
Are you going to be open this weekend?
Yes!
Have they done away with the discounts at Mt. Snow Country Club for season pass holders? We don’t ski that often but the discount on golf made it worthwhile for us to purchase a season pass.
There is indeed a discount on midweek golf.
