3.20.12 When will Mount Snow close for the season?
On August 28th, Mother Nature started messing with us and she hasn’t let up yet. She knocked us off our feet repeatedly but somehow we were able to piece everything back together and squeeze out a good season.

Aug 28. Snow Lake Pump House submerged. Each pump would have to be replaced before opening day.

Mother Nature sent us an October 30th snowstorm and we all assumed it was a sign of good things to come.
But Her latest thermostat crank-up is more than we can manage. Let’s face it, 70 degree weather melts snow! Did you know that our average midday temperature so far this month is 52 degrees? And we have already hit the 70’s several times this month? Crazy!!
So here is the scoop – we will be skiing and riding through Sunday, March 25th and then we will close.
We are hoping to have the following trails for the weekend but it will depend how we make it through the next few days of tropical weather.
For the weekend:
Ripcord
Freefall
Cascade
Canyon
Long John (recommended for intermediate and expert skiers only)
Inferno (groomed out – no park)
Gulch
Nitro
Not a guarantee but based on what we are seeing, we think these trails will make it. Please check the snow report for updates.
Because it is our last weekend, we plan on blowing Reggaefest out of the water. Get ready to have fun skimming the pond, launching your Duct Tape Derby entries and dancing on Cuzzin’s Deck and at the Snowbarn. We will have more great deals for you in our retail outlets and Caribbean specials in 1900′ Burger and Cuzzin’s. Help us go out in style – come on up and get your last runs in and say goodbye to all of our amazing staff who will be finishing up for the winter.

To answer a few of the questions that keep popping up.
Q: Have we ever closed this early?
A: I am sure we have but I searched back to 1994-95 and I could not find an earlier closing. In 1995-96 we closed on May 5!
Q: Will you keep Carinthia open longer?
A: No. We are losing snow and features rapidly, and we will not keep Carinthia open past our closing day.
Q: If we get a big snowstorm after you close, will you reopen?
A: Probably not but I have learned to never say never.
Q: Will you still have the Winter Brewers Fest?
A: No. We love the Brewers Fest, too, but we have a lot of expenses associated with that event (beer, tents, bands, etc.) and without a skiing product we are not sure we can entice enough people up to the mountains and we are not in the position, after a difficult winter, to run an event at a loss. We are still planning a BIG Brewers Festival on Labor Day weekend and we hope you will join us.
Q: Will you still hold the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge Finals?
A: After speaking with the folks at MDVC, it has been decided to cancel the event this year. The overall experience would not be a great one given the deteriorating conditions on the mountain. We hope to bring the event back next year and have it go off without a hitch!
Q: Will you move up Glade-iator?
A: No – we are hoping that Ripcord will be open for the weekend but no guarantees it will make it.
If you have any other questions, please ask below.
There is so much more I could write but I think I will leave it at that. THANK YOU to each and every person who came out and skied and rode with us this winter. Without you, Mother Nature would have defeated us. With you, she didn’t stand a chance.

I will leave you with my favorite pic of the year, taken on Jan 16. Happy trails everyone!

Sorry to hear – see you next year
Kelly
It has been a memorable season that has been thoroughly enjoyed by our family. They say all good things must come to end and so does the 2011 / 2012 ski season at Mount Snow. Thanks for everything including the Bluebird. Lets make this last weekend a great one. Really excited about Pond Skimming and the Duct Tape Derby. I also heard something about some new commercials on TV 41.
Sad to see the season end, but thankful we had one at all considering all the weather hurdles this year. Thanks to all the MS crew for their relentless resurfacing efforts.
I know it wasn’t an easy season for anybody, but thank you to the Mouny Snow staff for doing their best to keep the conditions as best as possible. This was my first year with a Classic Season’s Pass and I plan to do the same next year. Hopefully Mother Nature will be nicer next season.
Time to get the boat ready. Thanks for a Great season! The mountain did an amazing job without any natural snow.
I skied yesterday (3/19) and I’m really impressed that you’re going to get one more weekend out of the mountain. Awesome! Thanks for making it happen Mount Snow.
Your crew did a fantastic job this winter. I have skied 19 times this season which I feel is a real accomplishment for this winter. Hopefully next year it will be better. Looking forward to this weekend.
Everyone at MS deserves a huge “thank you” for doing so much with so little this year. I am a passholder who also skied a few of the other local mountains this winter, and none were able to match the quality product you guys gave us. You still make me feel like I am on vacation all winter long! See you on the patio this weekend!
Too bad theres wasn’t any snow I was suppose to go last weekend but it was too warm and we didn’t want to risk driving 4 hours and there not being any snow. I went to mount snow 2 time over this season and snowboarded for 4 days all together. The new lifts are very nice hope to go back next year hope that there will be more snow.
Thanks for all the hard work by the MS crew keeping us skiing this season. Even a “bad” ski year is still a great time at the Mountain
Do you know what hill we will be sliding the Duct Tape Derby sleds down?
It’ll be on the tubing hill. We’ll push as much snow together on there to make it happen!
As we are sad to see the season go everything comes to an end…..special thanks for everyone at MS for their hard and continous efforts throughout the season….mother nature did not cooperate however the MS snowmaking team and everyone else at the mountain made it possible to have a good season. See you this wknd at Sink or Skim. :)…….since there will be no hunt for a golden egg on easter is the mountain planning anything for this wknd for a free pass for next year.
Sorry – no golden egg hunt. You have to skim and not sink to earn a pass this weekend!!
We love Mt Snow for many reasons but the snowmaking and grooming are 2 of the main reasons. This year has been a challenge but we still enjoyed many great ski days and although we are leaving early this year we will be back in Nov for another Mt Snow adventure.
I think the mountain ops crew did a wonderful job with what they were handed this year….Kudos to them……
Kelly, will snowcamp and mountain camp be running this weekend??
If not, i’m sure i’ll be able to find the vast majority of the GREAT instructor crew that has done a phenomenal job with my kids this year on Cuzzins Deck to properly thank them for all they’ve done! Plus, there’s a certain triathalon partner of yours from Snowcamp who I REALLY need to thank since after 5 straight winters with a child in Snowcamp, the kids are finally too old!
Snow and Mtn camp are a go. We may have to make adjustments for beginners if Launch Pad doesn’t make it but that does not apply to your two. See you this weekend.
Thanks for the 411 Kelly!
Second the comment on the egg hunt.. pretty please on that? Kids will be crushed otherwise.. Taking Thu/Fri off on this news to maximize what’s left!
Sorry about the egg hunt mike. We are going to have to postpone that until next year.
MS ski school taught my kids (5&7) to ski in a half day. Great mountain and staff. Hoping that next year will be lights out snow.
Lights out snow!!!
Promise?
Thanks MS you for a great season. I was able to ski the mountain 26 times this season and was never disappointed. You guys did a fantastic job with the snow making and grooming. Looking forward to the weekend.
We’ve had a heck of a ride this year! So much has happened to all of us–some not so good but most good. The skiing & riding has been superb @ MT Snow in the face of the GIANT weather challenges. All have pitched in to help make it work and work it has. Thanks to the whole MT Snow crew. We’ll have a wonderful last weekend to celebrate together. I’ve had a fabulous year coaching Development and Competition Freestyle athletes. And I get to go out skiing in the PSIA Spring Rally for Saturday and Sunday. We’ll surely have a great time. It’s all GOOD. Here’s a toast to next season!
Sad to see the mountain closing so soon, but high fives to you, Kelly, and your entire staff more making this season as successful as it was. You just can’t always win with Mother Nature, and Lord knows she has dealt the valley a double whammy with Irene and now a virtually snowless winter. We will be up this weekend for Reggaefest…can’t wait! Again, thank you Mount Snow…you guys ROCK!! :)
Thanks for a great season. The Club had a wonderful year and we look forward to sending a bus to Reggae Fest as usual. We had our usual “Out of Control” season and will be back next year. Everyone at Mt. Snow did a fabulous job and we especially send a thanks to the bartenders at Sun Bowl.
Thanks for running all of the trips this year Sylvia, we love having the OC’s at Mount Snow and I know the Snowbarn bartenders appreciate all the apres ski parties!
Unfortunatley, I could not ski this winter (just had ACL surgery) but my family was able to get out on the mountain for over 20 days of skiing this season. I took the journey to Mt. Snow with our three daughters and my husband and enjoyed watching the girls thrive as a part of your ski school and my husband improve his skills to ski the best he ever has. We are so excited to come back to Mt. Snow next year as a family of Season’s Pass holders (I’ll be back out there, too!) THANK YOU for making this winter a great one- we created magical memories and our entire family LOVES Mt. Snow. :-)
This feeling is inevitable every year, but it never hurts any less. It only adds insult to injury that the season was just so short! Thanks to the Mt. Snow crew for making it happen at all; we simply just didn’t have a Winter! Season passholder 5 years running and don’t plan on ever stopping! Here’s hoping for an epic season next year to make up for this one! See you on Saturday and Sunday for one last weekend and then again (hopefully) in November!!!
Thanks for the great year Mt Snow! Fantastic job for such a bleak snow year. I will try to make it up this weekend.
Tough year. I was amazed conditions were as good as they were considering the crappy hand mother nature dealt. At least I got to mountain bike and kayak all winter
Thanks for blowing snow on Ripcord earlier this season. This trail has been the reason I’ve gone for the past 2 weeks! I REALLY hope it’s ready for more action on Sunday… Will you guys groom it at all to spread the snow? Thanks
Thanks for a great season – it was remarkable that we got in so much great skiing with the weather not cooperating. You guys all did an amazing job of keeping the trails open and enjoyable.
Thanks to all!
Has there ever been a year without the Gladiator – i mean since it was started?
I am sorry to hear this, but I’d like to give your guys kudos for doing a great job despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Here’s to hoping for a better season next year,
Thank you Kelly and your staff for working so hard to rescue our season. You did a fantabulous job and we are very grateful. Mother Nature always seems to have a way of balancing things out. I’m betting on a big snow for next season. GO SNOW!
I love Mt. Snow… My Bro skis there all the time and absolutely wants more!!!! Hope to make it to the big bash this weekend!! Parks RULE!!!!!
You have the most amazing snowmarking, grooming and parks crews. These teams truly made something from nothing this winter, and as I told my amazed friends every Monday, we had an awesome weekend of snowboarding – each and every weekend since Dec. 10. Mount Snow people rock, Kelly – and we’ll all be back next year, whether or not Mother Nature smiles – because we smile every time we’re there. Happy trails!
As I sit here and let the news set in I’m thinking about all the good times I had this winter at Mt Snow. All of the mountain ops crew went above & beyond to give us the best conditions they could and I want to thank each & everyone of them. I’m extremely sad about the mountain closing this weekend but I plan to also go out with a bang. I’m going to work tomorrow and telling my boss that I’m taking the rest of the week off and I’m coming up to enjoy the last days. My only regards this season was being greedy with all the overtime my company offered and not getting up as much as I planned to. Next year will be different! :)
What does this paragraph mean…
Q: Will you keep Carinthia open longer?
A: Possibly, but probably not midweek. We are watching it very closely and could reopen for March 31 and April 1. You can check the snow report for updates.
????
Does that mean that your going to open only carinthia after closing weekend???
This was a great season even though there was not a lot of snow
It was a great season despite all of the obstacles. From last winter to this winter we went from massive to minimal snow….but your crew got it done and made for a great season. Thanks for another year of great memories :-)
Kelly – thanks for your direct and honest comments on your blog.. It’s very refreshing to hear. I’m sure you’re a large reason why Mt Snow is in such good hands.. Good luck for a better season next year..
Kelly–
Can you imagine the type of yers it would have been without the new snow making equipment? You and your staff did a great job considering the lack of support from Mother Nature!
Let’s start thinking SNOW for next season!
Thanks for a great year!
Kevin
question on the sink or skim…does everyone that makes it across earn a season pass or is it up to the judges decision?
Barb, the judges choose a winner based on their style and costume, etc.
Wow – your comments make this crazy winter so worth it. I just forwarded a link to this page to all Mount Snow staff – I know they will appreciate your feedback and passion for Mount Snow. THANK YOU!!
Yippee one more weekend of DEVO :) !!!!
Will be up this weekend. Thanks for a great season.
To the entire Mount Snow staff…”AWESOME JOB”! Thank you for saving the winter season.
Is it safe to say that you won’t be having the Peace Pipe Jam this year?
we haven’t cancelled it at this point… need to see how big the pile holds up for a while!
if you have to cancell it can you postpone it to lets say may 20th or the saturday then???
WOW
How you folks did it I will never know, but you did.
I hope the same team returns next year.
I don’t hope for a rerun, but if it does rear its ugly head you folks have proven that you can handle ANYTHING !!!
Also, thanks for the honest reporting.
You folks have prove yourselves in so many ways.
Enjoy the summer, you deserve it !!!
Wow, what a sad ending.
It is so dificult to get over the fact that the season’s over and this shortened season makes it even tougher. You make new friends, you become closer to old friends and you can’t wait for it to all start again.
So to all of my friends and this includes my extended Mt. Snow family of employees, be safe this off season, be healthy, be lucky and take care. And most importantly, THANK YOU! This has been a tough year and we all managed to make sure that we kept smiling, laughing and taking care of eachother.
To Peak Resort Owners, your efforts were amazing, you will enjoy the benefits for years. You have earned the trust and respect from your customers because you care, and because your staff is committed as well.
Kelly and Co. thank you, thank you, thank you.
We will see you all soon, hopefully this weekend, if not over the summer.
PEACE!
JFT
Hi fives to the management, snowmakers and groomers for keeping the mountain in such great shape with the little bit of natural snow they had to work with all season. GREAT SEASON!!!
Kelly,
Passes are bought and ready for another year of adventures at Mt Snow.
We all know what an AWESOME job you and the WHOLE staff have done this winter. The Bluebird was outstanding, such a wonderful addition to the mountain. Kudos to you. Your passion really shows at the mountain. I think the fact that you are so approachable and out there hands on is so refreshing and such an asset.
Mount Snow is such a family…. Employees, one and all and the loyal customers
together make it a fantastic time and a place.
Can’t wait for the weekend and all the fun times being part of Ragae fest … PARTY time at Mt Snow. See you in the pond…
Kudos to the entire staff at Mount Snow. Despite the worst of winters you managed to provide us with a super fantastic, fun filled season. We shared so many wonderful days with our friends. Your staff is the most personable, and capable any mountain could ask for.
We begin our snow dance for the 2012 -13 season filled with many powder days.
Thank you for all of your efforts to make each day a bluebird day
oxox
Thanks for doing such a great job everyone @ MS
No complaints from me. I have already bought my mid-week pass for next year!
We left the mountain this past Monday with heavy hearts, saying good-byes to the wonderful staff who made Mt. Snow a great experience this past season. Mother Nature may have cheated us but all of you did your best and it showed. We’ll be back next year and for years to come. Be safe, enjoy the summer and pray for (early) snow . Lots of snow !!!!!!!!
Hey guys! Great job this year. I was up there today (wed). The upper 2/3 rds of Chute seemed to have good snow on it. Maybe you guys could piece that together with the bottom 1/3rd of fallen timbers (using the crossover) for another trail this weekend. Just thinking out loud….
Sorry you guys had such a tough winter to deal with! But hey, the new lift sure rocks!
Kelly,
Thanks for all your efforts to make lemonade out of the lemons Mother Nature presented the valley this season. I’ve been skiing Mt Snow since 1975 and this has been the most challenging weather conditions I can remember. Your crews did an incredible job. Let’s make this last weekend a great one!
Jim
This is definitely a tough one coming after a number of ever earlier closings. I skied today and can understand why this time, I only hope you’ll let the conditions determine the closing on good snow years too. Right now I sure wish we could cash in some of those past post-closing days where perfect thick wall-to-wall cover was left to melt away with no lifts turning. Again this was a rough season, no two ways about it-, with only a couple of truly big powder days….one of which was only about 3 weeks ago!!!
I’m really sad but wow hats off! to MT Snow! I have been skiing at mount snow for years and I feel like it’s a family so many familiar faces year after year!! This spring skiing thing isn’t my fav but I will do my part as a proud season pass holder for the past 15 years to party on the patio!!
Thanks Mt Snow for a great “weird” year!!
Hi Again
I did leave out one more thing in my earlier comments.
Lets not forget the shop keepers in town , on rt 100 and at the mountain.
Let’s make this weekend one they will remember.
If you need clothes, for any purpose, buy them here.
Need equipment ? Don’t wait until next year, but it here, but it now.
Sundries, Furniture, Gifts, etc buy it here, buy it now.
Shop early for Christmas or any Holidays.
Catch the fever.
Let’s show the locals that we care.
After August 2011 they could have used a solid winter.
They didn’t get it yet.
Pass the word.
Spend it here, whatever the purchase.
The folks back home can take the hit better than the folks in the Deerfield Valley.
I plan to grab my plastic and see whay I need, or could use.
Share the wealth, share the faith.
These Folks are worth it !!!!!!
Great job this season. I enjoyed many days of skiing despite what seemed insurmountable obstacles.
Ok, so my son comes home from college and announces to his mother and I that he is taking time off from school and will be living in the Mount Snow area for the winter (Boarding Bum)—-the early closing most likely means he will be moving back under our roof sooner than expected—please pray for a freak snowstorm to hit and keep him up there for a few more weeks.
Great Season & just wish you folks were closer.

Sorry Scott! Good luck with that :)
I can’t thank you all enough for the great posts. I was dreading this blog and you all have been very gracious with your responses. I am really looking forward to seeing you this weekend.
Mount Snow mountain ops are the BOMB. The #1 conversation on the lifts all season has been what an incredible job they’ve been doing on so little to work with. Conditions were SUPER all the way up through season passholders’ weekend – and while they went downhill incredibly quickly after that, you guys delivered on an amazing season. I re-upped my pass, and got one for my husband too. We couldn’t be happier to have an ongoing affiliation with this mountain. Thanks for the honesty, too – some of the other hills in the region have been blowing a lot of sunshine the last week or so with regard to their conditions, but we know we can count on you guys to deliver the straight dope.
I hate to see the season end – it seems like it was just yesterday that we took our first flight on the bluebird! Going to miss my buddies at the Grind, at 1900 and in the Station Tap. See ya next winter! We’ll do a snow-dance to make it a better one!
To the entire MS team- You guys did an awesome job this year in spite of Mother Nature throwing a major curveball this Winter ( and brought Spring way to early).. We still had a fantastic time w/ the great snowmaking- and the Staff was outstanding as always. lets Hope we dont see another winter like this for long long time….
Happy Reggaefest Weekend Eve…thank you to the Mt Snow team for the super snow and all the fun stuff that goes along with it this season…we got 3 more days to rip and laugh it up, we’re ready !
The staff at Mount Snow did a great job this year. Very sad but I def. had a few great outings this year. Hopefully next year will be great.
Mount Snow staff did a great job. From management always out in front, to snow makers, and mountain ops, the staff at the summit lodge and the Ambassador named Cleatis who helped my friends Ashley and Savaana get down LJ at 4pm (first run from up top). Great year despite the weather.
See ya next year.
