The First Lift Program – Learn to Downhill
If you are comfortable riding a bicycle and have always wanted to see what it was like to let gravity do most of the work, Mount Snow’s First Lift Program is the perfect opportunity to learn the basics of downhill mountain biking. During this 1 and ½ hour-long program, our experienced guides will take you through the ins and outs of operating a downhill mountain bike as well as tips on proper breaking, body position and safely riding the chairlift.
That’s right, you will ride the chairlift on your first day of downhill mountain biking thanks to the East’s longest lift served introductory downhill trail, aptly named “The Gateway”, which made its debut during the summer of 2012. It is 3.0-miles long, at least five feet wide and follows a number of switchbacks with smooth banked turns while traveling through both open field and wooded areas with no more than a comfortable 12 percent grade the entire way down. Perfect for all ability levels, but built with the beginner in mind.
A typical First Lift Program experience starts with getting fitted and geared up with your body armor and helmet followed by an overview of how to operate your downhill mountain bike and a brief ride around the base area to get familiar with how it functions. Then, it’s up the Canyon Express with your guide for a fun ride down The Gateway trail. Depending on time, you may be able to take multiple runs down The Gateway trail with your guide as long as it falls within the hour timeframe.
