Kelly’s Blog: Great Deals on Sunday, Feb 3
I hear you when you say that skiing and riding is expensive. It is. But some things are well worth the cost.
When I think about all the things I do for recreation and the cost, skiing is a pretty good value. Yes, there are activities that are relatively inexpensive but high on the satisfaction-meter…like kayaking. There was the initial investment of the kayak, paddle and vest but since then, it is pretty much free. I like recreation that gives me a work out, has an adventurous element and good scenery. Kayaking has all that but is not as social as skiing. Let’s face it, after a day on the water, I don’t paddle up to a shoreline bar with Bruce Jacques rockin’ the Madonna bra (hmmm – idea forming.)
When you think about all of the operations behind a day on the slopes, it is quite impressive. From cleared parking lots to snowmaking, grooming, ski patrol and lifts, there is significant infrastucture that has to be in place to provide a safe and fun ski day. So it is easy for me to say that skiing is a good value, because I can see the cost of providing it. But I am sensitive to the affordability side and like to share great deals whenever we have one.
This weekend I think there is a big football game or something being played on Sunday and in it’s honor we put together a few deals to help you get some excercise before you dive head-first into that 7-layer dip! Here’s the deals:
$99 2-day Super Sunday Plus ticket – valid Sunday Feb 3 and Monday Feb 4
$59 Super Morning Ticket – valid Sunday Feb 3 from 8 am til 12:30pm
$25 I Hate Football Ticket – Sunday afternoon 12 noon to 4 pm
All deals available at the ticket window. No price changes for Youth/Senior.
And you don’t have to hate football to buy the $25 ticket – it just sounded good. I’m not all that interested in football but I’ll be on the couch with my adult beverage and cheese-dripping, carb-loaded snacks, rating the commercials and falling asleep by half-time!

Kelly,
Do you have a late season pass or a deal for next season’s passes that would be able to be used for the end of this season coming up soon?
Thanks
Alex, last year we offered the Vernal Eternal pass and we’re still deciding on whether to do that same deal again. Stay tuned!
For what it’s worth please do haha!
Thanks for the quick reply.
Kelly,
I just read some of your old blog entries about the Bluebird Express. I am a long time seasons pass holder at Mount Snow, and find the bubble a real improvement, especially on some of those bitter cold days that we’ve had this winter. However, I find the unloading at the top a real problem. In fact, I was injured getting off the lift on December 24th…injured my tailbone, and I am still dealing with some pain over 5 weeks later. In my opinion, the problem has to do with that 90 degree turn at the top. If you go straight when you get off the lift, then you are likely to run into people who are standing there or trying to cross over to upper Exhibition or Cascade. And if your really lucky, the Quad might be running, and then you have even more people standing around. Some people on the left side of the lift, go right; some people on the right side of the lift go left and that’s how I got injured…the person next to me was trying to get out of the way of someone who was just standing there, so he turned to get around that person and as a result cut me off.
We just skied at Stratton earlier this week, and they have several six packs. I realize their six packs are not bubbles, but it seems to me that Mount Snow could learn something from the way you unload from their six packs. There is plenty of room to go straight when you unload. There is no temptation to make a hard turn to get to a trail. Skiers don’t get tangled up. It seemed much safer and more efficient (the lift didn’t keep stopping for people who fell or were in the way).
I know a fix for the six pack isn’t going to be simple. But it needs to happen before someone is seriously injured. Relocate the summit lodge so skiers would unload straight off the lift. Move the top of the quad so less people are gathering in one place. I’m not sure what the answer is, but I beg you to address it.
Thank you.
Debbie
Debbie – I understand what you are describing. Every mountain is different and you have to work with the landscape you are handed. Mount Snow has a relatively small summit. In order to replace the Summit Triple with a high speed lift, we had to deal with the space constraints. Contour unloading (the way you unload on the Bluebird) is no different than unloading straight off the lift. You stand up at the “unload here” sign and ski off the ramp. The problem, as you describe, is when someone cuts you off or skiers are lingering in the unload area. It is very frustrating. Eventually, a new summit lodge will be built and we be able to re-position it so you can unload off the bluebird facing west (following the same path as the lift line.) Moving the grand summit express is not an option due to cost and where would you move it too? Until we can build a new summit lodge we must focus on education. On weekends and holidays we have ambassadors at the summit directing traffic away from the unload area. That area is defined by brushes set in the snow and is a no-stop area. Secondly, we encourage skiers and riders traveling up the lift to make a plan. Discuss what trail you are going to ski. If the guy on the left says he is going to the north face, remind him to go straight and then head to north face once he is out of the no-stop zone. I regret that you were hurt and I will remind Ambassadors how important it is to ask guests to get out of the way of those unloading.
Hi Kelly,
I enjoyed Mount Snow during MLK weeekend with my family. i found Mount Snow to be very progressive in new ski resort technologies.
I’m a NY-based visual artist with passion for cartography. Recently I studied (can’t help myself) trail maps from several large ski resorts such as Mount Snow, Gore and Killington. With large acreage and several mounains or several sides of a mountain used for skiing, trail maps become broken up, compressed, artificially streched out at times, and disjointed.
I will try to be brief: to create easier to read and more informative trail map I would place the top of the mountain at the center of the map and have the trails expand from there in more natural direction. To indicate the highest point(s) i would use old and tried method of contour lines and color coded elevations -those would give skiers and riders very clear picture of local trail steepness while keeping the overall image clear and readable. Such map would also give the skiers good picture of those small side trail that sometimes end up going up or flat instead of down.
Thank you for you time.
Sincerely,Krystof
Krystof – very interesting idea – thanks for sharing that with us.
Hi Kelly,
The Truck vs Machine thing on the 15th. Can you tell me where on the mountain it is going to happen. I hope it is not on the slopes, but if it is I would like to avoid it. thx
It will be on snow. In the general vicinity of Lower Exhibition / Charlie’s Chase / Yardsale.
Hi Kelly-
Can you please tell me what happened to TV 41 and the Snow Show? We have been skiing Mt. Snow for many years and found the Snow Show very informative in the morning before getting on the hill. They would give snow reports, trail reports and also talk about upcoming events. I found that very evident this wknd skiing for Mardi Gras. I can honestely say that I do not think many people were informed. We had on our beads and I saw only one person with beads on. I thought that was kind of sad. On the Snow Show they would dress like gesters and keep everyone well informed of whats going on. Hopefully there would be a way for a show like that again.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks!
Sue – Outside TV hosted the Snow Show and they basically closed shop this summer. It is very unfortunate because everyone loved that show. The good news is that you did not miss Mardi Gras. We are celebrating this weekend and there will be lots of beads and give-aways. So please, wear your beads this weekend.
thThe skiing Sunday was great you should consider the 8 am to 12:30 pass on a permanent basis. The Bllue Bird Express and the snow making systems are a great plus for the mountain The elimination of the snow Show and the placement of the sushi bar rather then the coffee shop is in my opinion a negative. The crews did a great job getting the mountain in shape for Sunday as Saturday the conditions were poor at best. great job
Kelly-
Thank you for letting me know that. It is very unfortunate that they closed shop. Glad we didnt miss Mardi Gras…we will be wearing our beads. :)
I was riding the Bluebird on Saturday. The lift is so warm, it’s awesome! But, there’s room for improvement. When the chair goes over the sheaves (wheels) the bubble lifts up about 4 inches, causing a rush of cold air. Best example I can think of is opening your freezer when you’re right in front of it. Open it once every 20 seconds, and you’ve got the Bluebird’s bubble problem! Any way to fix this by adding more weight to the bubble, or would this cause the chair closing/opening mechanism to not work?
