Kelly’s Blog: New Year, Fresh Start
Yeah, after a week of jelly beans and death-by-chocolate cake, I am going back to the yoga classes and saying NO to processed foods. But aside from my annual holiday food binge, I see 2013 as nothing but a fresh start filled with plenty of positive signs!
Over 3 feet of snow in 6 days is the most obvious change since last year. On December 26th we were skiing and riding on 31 trails or 38% of the mountain. Today we have 77 out of 80 trails open…that is 96% of our terrain OPEN! Folks are even having fun in the trees and our snowmakers promise to get us open 100% with a plan to hit Ripcord and Committed this week. And the halfpipe, over at Carinthia, is getting bigger and bigger with each day of super-productive snowmaking.
Another very positive sign is the weather forecast. Cold and dry – a snowmakers dream come true.
I think my favorite thing about skiing Mount Snow is when all the natural snow trails open. Yes, some have a few bare spots but I see that as part of the challenge. I love to pick my way down a gem like Hop – they have so much character. My favorite this week was Shootout. Even after thousands of people skied it I was able to find good snow, especially along the tree line.
And one more positive sign to add – only 40 days into the season and we are building, what I like to call, the “fun factor.” The fun factor provides variety to the many different types of skiers and riders that we attract to Mount Snow. Over on Beartrap we blew a bunch of snow so the mogul fields can take shape. The parks at Carinthia are well on their way and Day and his crew will build Prospector and Junkyard next. Also on their list is Inferno, the superpipe and the new park, The Farm. Thanks for the bag jump this week – it has been so much fun to watch. Charlie’s Chase hosted its first race yesterday and we made snow early on Ego Alley to provide our young ski racers a training venue. And Southbowl is almost complete so that we can host alpine races and our kids can compete on their home mountain. Our tubing park is in full operation and we are already planning to add a few more elements around the mountain to increase the fun factor – stay tuned!
Thanks to everyone for your snow dances! They worked and we received the snow that you deserve. Enjoy it, embrace it and have fun.

Kelly:
Boyd’s Family farm has a notice posted that someone left a Tiffany money clip with $$ in it. If I send you a picture of the notice, could you display it at the entrance to Blue Bird, Canyon, etc?

Peter – probably best to let the Dover PD know about it. Anyone who lost something of that value will be checking up on it. Thanks for your concern for others!
Hey how much more snow does the mountain need to open Ripcord? Thanks
A LOT! But our snowmakers are on it, starting tonight.
And Hop ! I kinda like that little trail.
Hop is sweet. I even had fun on Fool’s Gold (Carinthia) and Moonwalk/Dippers today. Natural trails still holding on strong. But I’m not going to lie. I was thinking 6″ of fresh snow would make them even better!
I would like to commend the staff at Mount Snow for holding up under the pressure of “snow business” . Everyone I spoke to was pleasant under pressure. You have really trained them well.
About time MS caught a break and got a dump. Would be nice someday to make the summit lodge bigger and have more food choice. Either way its my favorite break hangout and place to eat. I was very inpressed how they got their supplies to the top by using the chair lift. Kodos to that crew. I thought for sure a snowcat took everything up threre.
Where’d the speakers go on the Bear Trap lift? I miss the music. :(
they’re being repaired and will be back up soon!
Yeah ! And where did the bumps go too! ;-)
Dont show a few who knows who skiing without public on closed trails when ski cops just lift rope for a few isnt dropping rope.
Fred, the rope was dropped right after we were allowed to duck it with Patrol.
I’ve been up to Mount Snow twice already this winter (including the dump after Christmas!) and hope for several more trips this winter.
I want to thank you guys for making the switch over to Coke in the lodge for your soda vendor! But I have to ask, what happened to the BBQ sauce in the main lodge? I always get chicken fingers and fries for lunch, but it just isn’t the same without the BBQ!
Sorry it took me a while to reply but I had to eat my way across the resort in search of BBQ sauce. I don’t know about the days when you were here but I can assure you that each base lodge now has BBQ sauce at the condiment station (not beside the chicken fingers!) Enjoy!
The skiing was fabulous over the New Years Holiday and you guys did a great job handling the massive amount of people. Just one quick thought from a long time passholder —- I thought passholders could get on the lifts earlier on Saturdays for a half hour prior to the lifts opening for all others?
Saturday the 29th I stood for 35 minutes and watched a line of people load up the BlueBird lift with food for the top of the mountain?? Cant that be done earlier —— or on the Summit Express — or up the hill by a Cat or anything? The Bluebird was the only lift to the top open and I was one of about 100 passholders who stood there watching the lift get loaded and then sat on the lift as the employees and food was emptied chair by chair..
Either have both lifts to the top open or bring the food up to the top some other way???
AM Express starts tomorrow at 7:30 am. We have had it posted in our online snow reporting page since November – I apologize that you missed it. You will not see that problem with food in the future. Big food deliveries are done by cat at night. Small items are taken up the chair before it opens or the staff will ride the Grand Summit Express or they will wait for the first chair crowd to go up. I apologize for that.
One other thought ——– cold sushi replaces hot coffee and hot chocolate in the prime spot in the base lodge? I love sushi but not coming in off the trail with ice on my lips and frozen toes…. It may work in March but I saw a grand total of about 4 people in that prime real estate over the Christmas break… Bring back something warm in that slot please??? Another waffle house ?? Dunkin Donut shop? ……
You can still get specialty coffees, lattes and cappuccino at the VT Country Deli counter, located across from Marketplace. We will give GO FISH a year before making any decisions.
This may save Kelly a reply ——-I rechecked the rules on the “AM Express” and it clearly says it doesnt begin until January 5th that riders with passes can get on the bluebird at 7:30am and no longer need to be escorted…
I’ll be there tomorrow morning so we will see !!
