Kelly’s Blog: Wednesday Snowstorms
Last Wednesday I blogged about my great ski day with 6″ of new snow overnight. And today I had to jump on again to say this Wednesday did not disappoint! It is hard to say how much snow we received because this snow had more moisture content so its weight was compacting the snow it fell on. I woke up to snow at 5 am and it is still snowing now at 7 pm. It never stopped. My best guess is that we received 12+” that has compacted down to about 9″. Meteorologists are saying up to 4″ more tonight.
I was able to get out and ski this morning with a group from the Forest Service. Despite some visability challenges and high winds we had a good time – today was a true adventure on the hill. In the am there was still plenty of powder and I tried to ski as much skiers-right, as our snowmaking does not always reach those tree lines. I did not take any photos when I was skiing because it was a very wet ski day. As the snow hit us, it stuck to our clothes and melted on our warm faces. By the time I came in I was wet to my long johns and smiling ear-to-ear!
If you like sking the trees, your time is here! The snow is deep and the possibilities go on and on. Take a look at snow reporter Andy’s latest vid – he and Dan had some serious fun threading through the timbers on the North Face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UUMMCECWCNjC08BTJi2T9zqg&feature=player_embedded&v=ECe-Zgo8kA0
Dusk at a ski area is one of my favorite times. It marks the end of the day…sometimes an epic day and sometimes a challenging day. Our skiers are heading out and a quiet falls upon the mountain. Add snow and dusk becomes magical. Here are some pics of my exit this evening.
It is so nice when we get into a snow cycle. I could get used to these Wednesday storms. And for those of you heading up for the weekend there is snow in the forecast for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (hint, hint.)

Nice read Kelly, thanks for the blog. Hopefully I’ll get up there once this year.
Hello Kelly – Now living 6 hours away from Mt Snow, we target a late spring trip each year as close to my April16th Bday as conditions will allow.
Last yr I got luckly and I hit 2- 70 degree days and saw the pond skimming in the final days of the season.(March 25)
I know it is only March 1 but, is there a targeted close date that I should keep in mind. With the 110″ of snow so far this year is April 7th a good “estimate” or could you keep going till Sunday April 14
Regards
Sl
Scott, April 7 is still the target, but it’s not a hard date. If we have the visitation and snow, we could continue on.
Thanks Dan on closing date info
Your pictures of the new snow are beautiful! Please add top notch photographer to your resume!! We had a ball on Valentines Day..thanks to you! God bless and we’ll see you in 2 weeks for Mr 45 yrs. Birthday!! Regards, Marilyn
Thanks Marilyn! I actually always say to myself, “now if I were a photographer I could have captured that better.” I appreciate the encouragement. Tell Mr. 45 yrs Happy B-day. Too funny!
Passholder since day one of the present regime – will not be able to make the meeting on saturday –
Question – the glades really need some cleanup work – will that be something you will focus on for next year?
suggestion – allowing classic passholders $50 passes for other mt’s owned by Mt snow (like WIldcat)
Thanks!
Melissa, I can answer your first question… we clean and trim the glades every summer, on a rotating basis. there’s a lot of woods out there so it’s really just a matter of time before we get to your favorite spot.
Thanks! Could you tell me which one is on the roster for this year?
We have not decided yet. We look at the areas in the spring and make a decision on where we will go. Any suggestions?
Hi Kelly,
Claim jumper really needs all those tall saplings cut back down, its nearly impossible to cut a trail through there anymore. Alot of trees seem to have fallen (over the last couple years of course) in Sap Tapper and really have clogged it up. The Sunbrook areas seem fine as do the majority of the North face areas.
Hey Kelly,
Sorry, one other comment. Instead of trying to assess these areas in the spring, they should be looked at when they are supposed to be skiing well. (in my opinion). So like, right now! ;-)
If you look at an area this week that cant really be skied well because of clogging or to much undergrowth (or whatever) they should go to the top of the list. If you look at them when most of the snow is gone, you may lose perspective of if the glade is really in good shape or not.
So send some people out to ski and ride them this week! Why do i think your people will be lining up for that assignment !!!
The glades next to One More Time have a lot of brush that needs to be cleared out. Woods between Uncle’s and Ridge need a complete cleanup.
there is a spot in fantastics (off ridge) that there is only one track down on skiers right that really needs some work. The steep part of sap tappers (off ego) also needs work, as does large sections of the bottom parts of the trials (that big windstorm did a lot of damage in there this year). Assessing them right now is great idea. Maybe you could make it two this year, or the worst areas of several – I really feel that they have been neglected. Thanks!
thanks for the glade feedback all – good to hear from you. and bob we are constantly accessing – i was just looking for the areas that are important to you. a lot of the fall down was due to the ice storms in the last few years – still cleaning up from that.
I came up Thursday – Sunday to capture the last of the best. If you remember back on Jan. 26 I got stuck on the Bluebird for about half an hour in zero degree temperatures and commented how “I was able to study my tracks in detail, and then went into the main lodge to warm up only to have the fire alarm to go off, after that it was a fantastic day.” I had received a $30 guest voucher for lift, clinic, or rental, for that inconvenience, which was appreciated. On last Saturday I was going to purchase next years season pass and was told that the voucher toward a lift did not apply to a season pass lift. I really had not thought of using it toward the season pass until on Friday, due to the Bluebird shutdown on my second run, which resulted in another $20 guest voucher.
Was I told correctly that “vouchers toward lift” does not apply to a season pass? ( I hope in was in error)
Please let me know your position.
