Dover, Vt. (October 21, 2013) – The highly anticipated annual resort polls from major ski and snowboard publications have been released and Mount Snow’s Carinthia Parks sits atop the rankings as the Number One East Coast Terrain Parks in both TransWorld Snowboarding and SKI Magazine for the 2013/2014 season. Freeskier Magazine has Carinthia ranked amongst the Top Ten Terrain Parks in North America.
Carinthia is the only all-park mountain face in the eastern United States and encompasses 100 total acres of terrain with eight different terrain parks ranging in size from small features to extra-large features, plus a 400+ foot superpipe with 18-foot walls. With almost 150 different terrain park features at his disposal – all custom-built at Mount Snow – freestyle terrain manager Day Franzen and his crew of park rangers spend the winter reshaping, rebuilding and refreshing this unique freestyle playground.
“We’ve got a great thing going here at Carinthia. Our goal has always been to get more people enjoying the parks and I think we’ve done that through progression by design,” said Franzen. “To be recognized as the top parks in the East really is an honor, but it’s also motivation for us to keep stepping it up to the next level and remain on top for years to come.”
The freestyle movement began at Mount Snow back in 1992 when Un Blanco Gulch opened as the first terrain park the East Coast had ever seen. Since then, the resort has maintained its commitment to offering innovative freestyle terrain, culminating in 2008 when officials decided to dedicate the entire mountain face of Carinthia to terrain parks. Inferno, Carinthia’s extra-large feature terrain park, is the only park on the planet to have hosted both a Winter X Games and Winter Dew Tour slopestyle event.
New for this season, Carinthia is introducing a terrain park called The Farm. “A lot of terrain parks are going urban, but with The Farm we’re going rural,” Franzen says. The features in this new park will be modeled after things commonly seen all over the Green Mountain State like barns, sap buckets, horse trailers and maybe even a tractor; all of which will be rideable.
Carinthia Event Calendar:
Grommet Jam Series (Dec. 30, 2013, Jan. 20, 2014 & Feb. 17, 2014) – Three part series for kids age 12 and under held in Grommet, Carinthia’s small feature terrain park. The event includes freestyle instruction from Mount Snow coaches in the morning followed by a friendly competition in the afternoon with winners going home with gear from event sponsors. Named the #1 Terrain Park Event by readers of Ski Area Management Magazine.
The COMP (March 8, 2014) – Carinthia Open Mega Plaza. This will be the second year of The COMP, which is now Mount Snow’s signature snowboard competition with at least a $6,000 cash purse up for grabs for the pros. It takes place in a huge plaza-style park set up near the base of Carinthia and is expected to grow into one of the biggest snowboard events on the East Coast.
Carinthia Freeski Open (March 14 & 15, 2014) – Mount Snow’s annual AFP Certified slopestyle event attracts some of the top freeskiers in the land with pros vying for a piece of the $6,000 cash purse. Held in Carinthia’s largest park, Inferno.
