Comments: The big news keeps on coming... on June 10 Mount Snow announced that it will transform Carinthia into a massive terrain park system when it opens for the 08-09 season. 95 acres, 12 terrain parks, a mini pipe, a superpipe, a hikeable park, a learning area, a big air site, a revamped base lodge with a skateboard ramp - it's all coming to Carinthia. Then, on July 14, the AST Winter Dew Tour announced that it would hold the second stop of its series at Mount Snow. The world's elite freestyle skiers and riders will converge on Mount Snow January 8 - 11, 2009, competing in slopestyle and superpipe. It will be televised live on NBC, with footage also airing on USA, MTV and MTV2.

So what else is new for the 2008/09 season? Well, a Super Polecat fan guns started arriving on June 2, with more shipments scheduled every week through August. Crews have installed nearly 100 guns already, while electricians are in the beginning stages of laying the gridwork to power the machines. In all, we’re dropping more than $5,000,000 into snowmaking upgrades this summer and installing 150 fan guns. Add that to the $3,500,000 we spent installing 101 guns last summer, and we’re sitting on 251 fan guns, the most of any resort in North America (to be fair, Mexico didn’t give us much competition).

Several well-trafficked trails will be flanked by the new guns, including Ridge, Meadow, Upper Nitro, Lower Titanium, Mine Shaft, Deer Run, Canyon, Lodge, and Lower Exhibition, as well as other assorted locations. By purchasing the energy-efficient fan guns, we’re eliminating the need for 16 diesel-powered air compressors that power traditional air/water guns, and that saves the air from an annual average of 200,000 gallons of diesel exhaust.

In addition to the $5 million snowmaking expansion, $1.4 million will be spent on painting chair lifts, improving the guest locker room, and upgrading the Mount Snow Golf Course.

So go ahead, sit back and relax this summer. But don’t forget that while you’re barbecuing Boca burgers and testing the pH level in your pool, we’ll be prepping for the start of the 08-09 season, and dreaming of the best snow on the continent.
