New 6-Pack Bubble Chair!
Mount Snow Makes Big Statement with New Lift
WEST DOVER (March 5, 2011) – Mount Snow has announced that it has accepted a bid to replace the Summit Local triple chair lift with a new Leitner Poma high-speed detachable six-passenger bubble chairlift. The “six pack” chairlift will be the first of its kind on the East coast and demonstrates Mount Snow’s commitment to providing the best experience possible for their guests.
“Our goal at Mount Snow is to provide the best possible product for our guests. We are continuously making upgrades to our infrastructure to ensure a quality experience for our guests. We feel that installing this state-of-the-art chairlift in order to increase our high speed capacity out of the main base area is in line with this commitment,” said Jesse Boyd, VP of Operations for Peak Resorts.
The six pack lift will have a ride time of just seven minutes, reducing the ride time of the current lift by nearly half. The new lift’s bubble chairs look like conventional chairlifts but have a plastic shield, or bubble, that encloses the chair. Bubble chairs provide shelter from inclement weather and the convenience of ski-on, ski-off loading and unloading. Unlike a gondola, skiers and snowboarders keep their equipment on, get on the chair as they would a conventional chairlift, and then pull the bubble down around them.
“Let’s face it, Vermont has its cold days. After review of several lifts, I believe this six pack lift best meets our needs. Its bubble chairs will provide protection on cold days without slowing down the loading process” said Mount Snow General Manager Kelly Pawlak.
With this lift, Mount Snow will have three high-speed lifts in its main base area with a total uphill capacity of 8100 skiers per hour. This will greatly increase the time Mount Snow guests spend on the ski trails instead of waiting in lift lines.
Every night the chairs will be run off the line and stored in a heated storage barn, which has its advantages. First, the barn’s steady temperature helps to prevent fogging and ice build up on the bubbles. Second, should the mountain receive icing overnight, the lift line can be quickly de-iced, and the lift will be able to operate as soon as the chairs are deployed.
Along with the new six pack lift comes upgrades to the Grand Summit Express high speed quad. The upgrades include enclosing the terminal at the base of the mountain to shield guests from weather elements and replacing all 172 of the chairs with new chairs that feature safety bars and footrests.
With the purchase of the new six pack lift, Peak Resorts will have invested over $18 million in capital improvements to Mount Snow, including the installation of state-of-the-art snowmaking technology featuring 254 fan guns.

Gnarly!
Totally Radical Braaa
The lifts are often on “wind hold”, how will the extra windage of having a bubble on the lift affect the operation of the lift. It seems that with such a large profile wind holds will become more frequent, not less frequent. Does the manufacturer have any comment on this?
Also, what about the north face and sunbrook lifts? It seems like investments there would alleviate the overcrowding on the main face.
North Face lifts and especially Sunbrook lifts are PAINFUL, definitely agree that those deserve a lot more attention
Greg and Pete – They are doing major upgrades to the main lifts… this is absolutely huge. Mt Snow has done something major every year since taking over. I am those things are in the pipe… can’t do everything at once. I would argue that the most needed thing to do was create a new main lift to the top… they’ve done that and improved the current high speed quad. Certainly that takes precedence for this year over improving sunbrook and northface, yes?
That said… yeah it would be nice to have those lifts be upgraded too.
I agree completely. The new owners don’t remember the old bubble chair lifts that mount snow once had that were always on wind delay. The Chondolas at Sunday River are cool, but they are always on Wind Delay. You could put in the most expensive lift, if its always closed, it is a huge waste of money. I hope they have plans to beef up snowmaking because the main face trails will be skied off regularly.
Who gives a crap about the aerodynamics of it. This will get rid of all the crowds on the base. Just be happy dude and stop your whining
Right on!!
i do agree. sunbrook and north face do need a lot more attention
From what I’ve heard the bubbles do catch the wind, however, the chairs are WAY heavier, which counteracts the swing.
Awesome!!!! Mount Snow ROCKS!!!!
So glad to hear about this improvement. Just came back from skiing the canyons in park city Utah where they have the bubble lift. It is fantastic and does block the wind and cold making riding so much more enjoyable. Mt. Snow you are the greatest!!!!
I’m really excited about next year. If there is wind issues with bubble, the summit express could still run. We would be no worse off than we are today. And on good days the “new lift” will be amazing(faster and warmer). No one ever took the local. Will there still be single line or ones, twos, threes, fours, fives and sixes?
I know this is costly, but your new pricing strategy for season pass holders stink. We should continue to be able to put down the deposit and pay the balance in October. We now have to pay five months in full before the next ski season starts. Let’s grandfather the prior season passholders with the old policy. New season passholders you can do the new policy. We deserve a break. We hung on along time and supported this mountain.
Replace heavy metal with one those bad boys
It’s about time!
So psyched. Just hit back from canyons in Utah where they have bubble chair lift. It is aweSome. Will be great for mount snow. Best Mountain in the easy
I also just got back from Utah the other day and road the orange bubble lift. this will be beyond awesome for mount snow and the east coast weather!
I too just returned from the Canyons and loved the Orange Bubble Lift. Theirs was heated though (the seat), right? Will Mt. Snow’s also be heated?
Looking forward to it! Lift 19 (Sunbrook quad) next I hope!
My inside source says that sunbrook is next
Will the improvements be completed in time for the 2011/12 ski season?
yes rich, that’s the plan
Awesome… this really is exactly what they need, its gonna make mount snow so much better.
Will there still be summit chairlift rides this year? Or will the Canyon run instead?
This is wonderful and putting the footrests on the GS (something I have mentioned and was told was in the plans before is over the top. Peak is the best owner we could have ever asked for after Walt and we should count our lucky stars that they bought us out of the other owners and bidders. I think we would have been hard pressed to get the kind of investment in this mountain from anyone else.
OUTSTANDING and great work guys…..
P.S. As mentioned above wind hold is a bit of an issue now and with covers does this make it worse or are they just much better aero dynamicaly.?
great news
UM…. awesome chair in a bubble.
$95 lift ticket prices, also coming for 11/12!
not at all maybe an increase of 5 dollars tops
if the prices are that high then im going straight to Killington.
we’re psyched! congrats! mount snow continues to lead the way….like the “werks”
ok lets not all get to crazy too quick here guys. Yes this is a great thing and it will be great for the mid level blues and greens skiers and riders. But this doesnt really help the advanced people on the hill. are there any plans to change up the north face lifts for the advanced people. I am sorry, they do a great job here but it really is a hll made for the lower levels. They aver groom everything and increasing the main faces uphill will just increase the amount of beginners on the hill
There are currently no plans to upgrade the lifts on the North Face. plans indicate the next lift to be upgraded/replaced is the Sunbrook Quad. It will be replaced with a detachable high-speed quad and will follow close to, if not, the exact same footprint.
Yes uphill capacity/ the flow rate of skiers is sure to increase. However, if Mount Snow is able to complete their new snowmaking system in the near future, than the potential for bottlenecking should be alleviated. In theory, although skier initial skier processing (uphill movement) will increase, by adding additional “lines” (in this case snowmaking trails) to the system, the mountain will be able to process more skiers, without the quality of skiing being affected. In fact, the quality of the “ski experience” should improve.
Do you have information on Snowmaking improvements?
I would think water would be the biggest thing they need (both in terms of storage and pumping)
I disagree wholeheartedly. The lifts for the “advanced” skiers on the North Face are perfectly fine. Let’s be serious, they are less than 4,000 feet long. There is no need to replace them.
I also disagree with that they groom everything. They far undergroom compared to Stratton or Okemo – often more than half of the North Face is left alone (which is great).
Mount Snow has great cruisers and the natural flow of traffic is to the Main Base, This should provide a lot of relief for that…
The north face lifts break down regularly. Let’s also not forget the few times in recent history people had to be taken off the lift using ropes… They are not fine by any stretch of the imagination. I suspect more people have been taken off the north face lifts in ropes than sunbrook… to me that says north face should get priority even though “we have 2 lifts which is plenty.”
Look, the new owners are making lots of investments which is great. We are all happy about that and realize that ASC bled the mountain dry so the infrastructure is old and in need of some love. So THANK YOU GUYS! I am just expressing my desire for more modern lifts at the north face, not criticizing you. I know it will happen eventually.
but the main lifts serve the most percentage of the mountain, you can go on the blues and greens yes, but also take thanks walt over to sunbrook, or long john over to carinthia, you can say teh advanced skiers should get an upgrade too, but the carinthia riders could say that, same with the cruisers over at sunbrook, i think that the main face is the perfect place for a 6 pack bubble.
I think this is a great thing. There is always so much congestion by Summit Express and this should help greatly. It helps everyone because it gets people up on the mountain. Also, the location of Summit Local provides access to the North Face. The North Face’s lifts are satisfactory for that area. There are less people over there and between the 2 lifts I think that area is perfect for now. I think the next lift that needs to go is Sunbrook. It is not a high speed quad and is very slow. I think upgrading that quad will help bring more people over to that area.
This is great to hear and so overdue. The lifts at Mount Snow have been a problem for a few years. This will alleviate the crowds on the main face. Now we need a high speed lift on Sunbrook with more snowmaking on these trails. And, if we get lucky, new trails on Sunbrook to make this a stand alone area to ski. There is so much room for growth in the Sunbrook area.
A good day for skiers of Mount Snow
SICK! Hopefully the season pass price wont go up!!! Please no!!!
Great job Mt. Snow
There is no such thing as a free lunch, my friend.
The owners have invested 18 million dollars, and you better believe they have every intention of getting them back.
In an ideal world (from a cost standpoint), they could offset these expenditures simply by selling more tickets rather than raising prices.
The mountain hasn’t grown in size however, so while this model would spare you from paying for this improvement monetarily, you will “pay” by having to share the same snow with more people.
Pragmatic reality is that creating additional capacity at this mountain without expanding the terrain is NOT going to dramatically increase demand, so what you will see is some mixture of price hikes and additional skiers on the mountain.
Whether this is an improvement or not over the current arrangement depends on how well you tolerate crowds, and how much you are willing to pay.
I agree that there is no such thing as a free lunch but do they have to get it all back in one year. It looks like the season passes went up over 10%.
Mazel Tov to Mt. Snow. so many good changes since Feb. 1987, my first visit which SNOWBALLED into 20 years of sking bliss. the memories will be with me forever!
Great news – a six pack and footrests on the grand Summit! As a long time Mt. Snow regular (since the 70′s) I’ve seen a lot of changes on the mountain. I have to say Peaks has done a great job. Hope a new lift on Sunbrook is next.
Thank you Peak Resorts first of all for buying Mount Snow and secondly for your outstanding commitment to excellence.
Am I the only person that remembers the old two person bubble lift? What is old is new again…….it was a great lift, but this one looks better…..and is from this century. Good work!
Oh yeah????!!!!!!!! Well do you remember John Morgan???
I think you mean John M Organ ;-)
Yes… that’s him …;)))) Shoeeeeeeeeeeee Shots …from HIS shoe…hahahahahha
Here’s to North Country Fair and “Shoe Shots”. I actually stayed at the Snow Barn back when they had rooms.
Those were the days…. remember when he brought in the sand ….??
I stayed there for a 5 day ski week during spring break from BU. It was my first time to Mt Snow and first time skiing. I still love Mt. Snow
Love the improvements guys, keep it up! Ignore the complainers…they’ll never be happy!
Yea
Awesome, that is exactly what Mt Snow needed. I have been saying it for years. A high speed 6 with a bubble is so much better / faster than a gondola.
Great Idea. I agree that my visit was mildly uncomftorable while on the lifts on Sunbrook and North Face. The bubble 6-Pack will attract a lot more skiers/snowboarders to Mount Snow. I cant wait until I come back to this new technology! :)
I look forward to the new lift. My only concern is that there will be a lot more skiers on the mountain due to the increased lift capacity. Many trails are already quite crowded on the weekend and I can see this becoming a bigger problem. When you find this type of lift out west, the trails are wider and more varied.
Has Mount Snow considered the potential for overcrowding on the trails?
This is exciting news and eagerly anticipated. Exactly where will this lift be situated if it will be the third high-speed lift on the main face of the mountain?
Thanks for the upgrade!
It will be were the summit local is cirrently
Wonderful news – great choice for those frigid and windy Vermont mornings – we have ridden in bubble chairs overseas and its amazing the difference they make. Appreciate the improvements you guys have made.
The design of the North Face lifts is just fine. No bubble is needed there. However, these two lifts often seem to be broken down. About three weeks ago a large number of people were stuck down there because both lifts were not working. Is there any way to simply rehab or overhaul either or both of these lifts to make them more reliable? That would seem to be more bang for your buck than you’ll get from a new Sunbrook Quad.
Thank God!! I’ve been a Mt Snow regular since the late 80′s and this mountains lift system def needed an overhaul. Hopefully, the mention of upgrading Sunbrook to a faster lift is on the near horizon. I truely feel that will make a huge difference, cause thats where a large amount of us seasoned Mt Snow regulars like to hide on heavy crowd days.
Also, getting the foot rest on the Yankee Clipper/Grand Summit express quad is very welcomed! My old beat up legs are thanking you already!
Thanks Peaks! This mountain has needed a new lift for a LONG time now
HOORAY! Yes a great big Thank You to Peak.
A six pack bubble is an excellent choice. As for the next upgrade, keep in mind that many people don’t go to Sunbrook simply because they can’t bear the slowwwww chair. Replacing that chair next should bring more skiers to that area and thus alleviate some of the crowds both on Main and North Face as most have commented on this list.
Mount snow can’t load 4 people on a chair without incident how wil lthey handle 6! The mountain is not big enouh to handle all these people they will be loading up the mountain.
Then stay home! Mt snow is plenty big for everyone!
Agreed …
Mt. Snow is plenty big Jiminy Peak has one that mountains about the size of carinthia!!!
Stop complaining jeez
PLEASE do something with Sunbrook quad! The worst lift on the mountain. It’s a disgrace!!!!
Thanks to the team at Peak Resorts for innovating and investing in Mount Snow — a killer effort. Here are some comments I have on the various posts listed here — I too am a little concerned about traffic flow with the increased uphill capacity, but psyched about a gleaming new lift with a wind shield — great idea. The north face has enought uphill capacity when both lifts run, any more and it would be a mess. Front side traffic will be alleviated with the increased capacity when a Sunbrook high speed quad gets installed — could move up to 20% of front side (family skiers) to the abundant, under-utilized intermediate terrain on the sunny side (warming hut at the bottom with sun deck would make great family destination. Grooming at Mt. Snow is good but a little on the light side — don’t agree that it is over-groomed, if anyting undergroomed. They have left plenty of natural skiing options (more so than ever before) but should keep grooming a priority.
Warming hut would be great but my daughters would be thrilled if it included Waffle Hut #3!
The new lift looks like it is in the grand tradition of Walt Schoenknecht. As a long time skier at Mount Snow may I suggest that the lift be named “Walt’s Ride”.
i am 6’4 tall. i have long legs. in one of the photos here it looks as if the guy with the red suit on is hitting his legs on the bubble…Is this thing comfortable or “bigger” skiers and riders?
The lift improvements sound Great, although I would like to see the North Face Lifts included.
Are there any plans to expand the ski area acerage ?
Opening Trails to the west ridge from the SunBrook Area looks like great terrain, and would expand Expert & IntermediateTerrain area. Just dreaming I guess.
Great news! The local triple will be missed but not on a cold day! Great idea putting the barn in also to store the chairs….ice is not nice!
Great news about the new lift. Is there any thought or is it even
possible to cut a trail from the Sunbrook chair loading area to the
Carinthia slopes. It would make it much more convenient to get to
the bottom.
A new chairlift at Sunbrook would help to draw more intermediate and beginner skiers away from the main face. Sunbrook is underutilized. If they can get the water rights in place, snowmaking on Big/Little Dipper could also broaden the aceage.
How about a mid mountain restaurant by the loading area at Sunbrook? i prpopsed this idea to Dick Deutsh before. Make it nice, a place to go. it would alleviate crowding in the base area lodge and disperse people on the mountain during peak times.
I love this idea! Unfortunately, I foresee a lot of scummy teenagers and other idiots putting stickers, graffiti, Monster Energy, spit, etc. on the inside of the bubble. Is there any deterrent to this?
Sooo True ! I agree !
Another incredible improvement from the incredible people at PEAK RESORTS!!!!
I’ve said it before and will say it again. No other ski are in the North East has come some far, so fast. Your commitment to Mount Snow is so impressive. You continue to bring great change to the entire Deerfield Valley.
The State of Vermont should commend your dynamic approach in the RE-BIRTH of a great Ski Resort.
Kelly! Kelly! Kelly and Co. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
And Thank you to your great staff, from the guys in the lunchrooms and the porters to the cooks, bartenders, snow makers, groomers, bottle washers, lifties, etc.
You are all making a huge difference, you guys and girls make it happen. Thank you for making Mt. Snow the place it is today. I can only imagine where we will be next season and the seasons after that!
Good health, success and happiness to all of you!
Warm regards always,
JFT!
Yes JFT !!! and Lets not forget…………ROME was not build in a day… Great Job KELLY and her staff!!!
Will you folks be selling off the old chairs from the Summit Local? Who do we contact to purchase one?
We’re working on a plan for selling off old chairs. We’ll keep everyone updated.
I think there are more pressing issues with the lifts than adding a high speed 6 pack to the top (as Kathy says above “Mount snow can’t load 4 people on a chair without incident how wil lthey handle 6! The mountain is not big enouh to handle all these people they will be loading up the mountain”). Sunbrook comes immediately to mind for one. The mountain can’t handle the number of people now on a busy weekend. Let’s continue to improve the snowmaking ability before we put more people on the mountain.
AWESOME
First off, two thumbs up to Peak Resorts for overhauling Mount Snow within these past few years, they have done nothing but a good job as far as advancing the mountains customer satisfaction rating. The addition of over 250 state of the art fan guns that pump out more snow in about an hour than we got all of before the new year is only one of Peaks investments. The new six pack bubble chair will certainly provide another great commodity and should be perfect in its location, replacing the “summit crippler.” I wouldnt worry too much about overcrowding trails because while the chair may increase uphill capacity, with easier access to the north face it may split the people up perfectly. Also touching on the sunbrook situation that everyone seems to be concerned about, a new lift we could definitely use…but a lot of sunbrook’s attention comes from the die-hards who could somewhat care less. Those are the fellas with the beard-sicles ripping cloud nine on the pow days. Anyways, huck yeah to the six pack bubble…keep up the good work Mount Snow, you’ll always be my home.
Any plans to sell the old summit chairs? I know some ski areas have sold off there old chairs. How bout season pass holders get a free chair!
It’s about time! We got stuck on the Summitt Triple for over 1/2 hour recently. I vowed that because of the long lines and antiquated lifts, I wouldn’t come back next year, but now I’ll reconsider! Will it be up and running for next year?
6 Pack Bubble…Great News!! Peak is doing a great job for us all!…A Sunbrook High speed and a base lodge there at the loading area in Sunbrook would be incredible. Hope that is next!
awesome updates to the lifts and we def appreciate the $$ and attention Peak Resorts has given Mt. Snow…..however, maybe a surface lift should be given some kind of consideration too….get those who want to ski to the top of the mountain regardless of wind.
In regard to some of the wind concerns. these six pack chairs are very, very
heavy. It will take a good bit of wind to get them swinging to the point that the lift would have to stop. We have a sixpack at Jiminy Peak and we seldom get delayed because of wind. Ice is another story, its a big plus that they will be stored indoors overnight.
Just curious why you don’t move the existing high speed summit quad to Sunbrook and put the new 6 pack where the summit quad was. Leave the summit triple in place where it is as a back up. This would increase uphill capacity from the base and solves the ‘Slowbrook Quad’ Problem, all with only purchasing one lift. Hunter Mountain NY is relocating their old high speed summit quad to a diferent spot on the mountain after purcahsing a new 6 pack summit. Seems like the most cost effective option. Enjoy!
MUCH THANKS to Peak Resorts for their continued efforts to improve the quality of skiing. I have a second home in the area and I know this will positively affect the Valley. I won’t comment on making additional improvements since you seem to have it well in hand. I think you have greatly excited everyone as it is.
Then again, can you do something about the checkout lines at 7-11?
Kudos Peaks Resorts! The competition between Local Summit and Summit Express lives on! The bubble 6 kicks it up a notch. Now when leaving the Waffle Hut, it’s almost a coin toss!
Thanks from an old timer who remembers the original 2person bubble, Mixing Bowl, the outdoor pool, Red Cricket Inn, cable bindings and tie boots.
Based on Peak’s performance, those asking for North Face and Sunbrook upgrades should be confident they’re coming at some point.
this is sooo sickk i cant wait for this to happen but the nitro express could also use a bubble for us park riders that would also make Carinthia the best park in the north east!!!!
What color will the bubble be? Don’t pick orange…..
it will be just like the pictures
so much for our season pass prices not going up next year, honestly i think its about time for the serious riders here to upgrade to another hill. sorry guys but 949 $ for a season pass here is insane! i can ride out west for the season at a hill twice the size for less. No kudos to peaks from me
Excellent investment !!!
An older version of this works wonders at Mt. St. Anne, Quebec, Canada.
Congrats Mt. Snow – Smart Choice
Veteran Mount Snow skiers know there are sometimes gusty wind problems at the summit that cause lifts to be shut down. Lewis said wind issues have been taken into account with the design of the new lift. “The lift unload area and profile has been designed to minimize the wind effects” he said. “The unload location will be higher on the summit than the current Summit Local lift. Guests will unload the lift from the side, basically facing south toward the Grand Summit Express. The top terminal will be located next to the Summit Lodge building which we expect to be an added barrier from the wind. The weight of the chairs themselves will play a role, in that the heavier chairs will be less affected by wind. However, given it’s Vermont and we get some big storms, we anticipate there will be days when the lift is on a wind-hold. The safety of our guests has always been, and will continue to be, the only factor taken into account in determining whether or not any lift runs in the wind.”

In the reference pictures, what is the cable running from the top to the side? Is the bubble going to be automatically lowered?
Nice catch. The bubbles do not close automatically but they will raise automatically at the summit.
While the replacement of lifts is long overdue, and any upgrades are welcome, I think you would have been much better off replacing the two lifts at Sundance with this new sixpack rather than the old triple.
I say this because everyone skiing in the region of Hop, Ridge, Uncles, LJ, etc., ALL cut back over to the main base area instead of heading down toward the Sundance lodge, and this is what what causes the excessive lift lines and congestion in the main base area.
While the lift lines may become shorter with the additional capacity, the new lift will do nothing to relieve the congestion and traffic coming in to the main base area, and will likely worsen it. Meanwhile the underutilized Sundance area will remain underutilized for the foreseeable future.
Sorry Admin and/or Peak owners, while this is a good effort, I think your planning and decision are ill conceived.
Sincerely,
GW
I think it’s great what peak s Resorts has done so far. Maybe there next investment will be to purchase Haystack back to take some of the crowd problems away. I do agree with the one other person though that like the Government hitting the middle class so does Mount Snow Every year but one the prices have gone up and last year they did throw in 4- $50.00 guest passes Great but just maybe one year you raise the ticket price only for the skier that comes twice a year not the season pass holder. Also with today’s economy The payment plan should be in effect like last year.
Just curous if this is information you can release, how much does this whole thing cost, and do you recover any copsts by selling off the cable, chairs, motor etc, parts to other sites?
I ski at Jiminy Peak from time to time and their 6pack lift is fast and very comfy I personally enjoy ride on it. as for Sunbrook yes they should upgrade those lifts and expand but in time patience young grasshoppers
cant waiit too ridee in comforrt!!!! soo excited for ski season 11-12!!
Rode a bubble lift in The Canyons (Park City UT). The bubble on that one was colored orange, it was like being inside a huge goggle. Also the seats were HEATED!! Does anyone know if the seats will be heated on the one at Mt Snow? Very nice option on those cold days here in the east!!
our bubbles will be blue and the seats will not be heated.
We used to ski in jeans sprayed with Scotchguard and Army underwear. The lift ticket was single digits. We waited 45 minutes for the line and ride to the summit and we liked it. The bubble chair will isolate you from the outdoor experience. You might as well just take your flabby butts to IMAX.
