Tri For Hope Updated
In June I wrote a blog about the Tri For Hope Triathlon (see below.) The triathlon is only 3 days away (Aug 11th) and I wanted to give you an update. As I mentioned in my first blog, we are raising money for the American Cancer Society and I have invited you to share the name of a person in your life who is a cancer survivor or someone you have lost to cancer. I will put those names on my shirt and wear them on race day.
Thanks to everyone who has shared their story with me. This has been a very powerful experience as I have listened to your stories and realize that this is not just a shirt with a bunch of names. Each name symbolizes a life you cherish and I am very honored to be running on Sat with your friends and relatives.
Today at our weekly Rotary meeting one of our Rotarians told the group about the Tri For Hope and suggested that we pass the hat and raise some money. Within 10 minutes the hat made it around the room and $255 was raised. I have to tell you that the Deerfield Valley Rotary Club is a small group with big hearts. I greatly appreciate their generosity. They also asked me to add a few names to my shirt, which is as important to me as the donations.
I have been swimming a little more this year so that is a positive. I’ve been able to swim with Denise and Ann on Monday’s and these girls can swim. They swim for about an hour which is like a week to me! Denise gave me some good pointers on my stroke so I am hoping to follow through and not revert back to my old “sloppy stroke.”
I have also been running on Friday’s with a small group. Tom runs with us and is world-class triathlete. This fall he heads to New Zealand to compete in the World’s for the US Team. Last year, in Beijing, he came in 7th in his age division. When you run with Tom you would never know how much experience he has under his belt. He never brags or bolts ahead and he stays with us even though I can tell he is chomping at the bit to open it up. Every once in a while he throws out a little advice and my ears perk up! He asked my why I run with my arms up by my sides (kind of like a robot at a 45 degree.) I wasn’t really sure – I guess that is how I have always run. He showed me a more relaxed arm position where you drop your arms down (think Raggedy Ann but not too floppy) and exert less energy. It takes a little concentration to drop my old stance but “Raggedy Ann arms” is a more relaxed position. Thanks Tom!
This Saturday I will be trying my new stroke and abandoning my robot arms and wearing my shirt of magnificent people. That is my strategy and I am sticking to it!

June blog:
On August 11th Mount Snow will host its 4th Triathlon. This year we are changing it up a bit. A while back the marketing guys asked what I thought about partnering with the Vermont Cancer Association and making our triathlon a fundraiser. Easy answer – great idea! So this year our beginner/sprint USA sanctioned triathlon will be the Tri for Hope on Aug 11. http://www.triforhope.com/ Added bonus – the top fundraiser at our tri will receive a 2012-2013 Season Pass to Mount Snow. Fighting cancer and having no excuse to not ski your tail off are both excellent reasons to start training!
This will be my fourth year participating in the Mount Snow triathlon. I swim and run and my friend Stevie does the bike leg. It is the only triathlon I do so I fall into the beginner category. I was very nervous my first year but found that everyone is very supportive, no matter what your skill level is. Entering this triathlon gives me the motivation to train and this year I feel more inspired because we have partnered with American Cancer.
Several years ago I lost a very dear college friend to cancer and found myself, like millions, feeling numb and asking why. And like so many others, I have found comfort in raising awareness and money for cancer research and aid for cancer patients.
I love it when you can combine a passion like running or biking with a good cause. A few years ago, one of my Rotary pals, Don, wanted to build gardens in the Deerfield Valley that honored cancer survivors. He applied for grants and asked everyone for donations and three years later we have three wonderful Gardens of Hope in Whitingham (Historical Society), Wilmington (Health Center) and Dover (Blue Brook Triangle.) I help with the Dover garden and it has become my therapy. We asked cancer survivors to make stepping stones for the Dover garden and while I am digging, each stone reminds me of all the strong folks in our valley that battled cancer and won.

This year when I compete in the Tri For Hope, I will do it for Nancy. And for each of the stones in the Garden of Hope (you know who you are!) As you can see, I wrote Nancy’s name on my triathlon shirt so I can bring her along for support. If you are a cancer survivor, I would love to put your name on my shirt too. Or maybe you would like me to add a name in memory. I would love to hear your story and know that on Aug 11th when I cross that finish line, I am not alone.
T-shirt in June.
Shirt today. There is still time. Let me know if you would like to add a loved one to my shirt.
8.15.12 – Thanks to everyone who came out and participated and who donated to this great cause. Collectively, we raised over $24,000. Stevie and I finished with smiles and no injuries! Here’s a few pics.
Denise heading out on the run after a blazin’ hot bike.
Dave and John – hey, I’ll swim and you run.
My teammate Stevie gabbing with all her fans on one of her laps.
Stevie and I before the swim.
Team Alison, Shirley and Lisa were right by our side.

I think everyone has been touched in some shape and form by cancer. I think it’s great that the Triathlon has been reformatted to support a cure.
I lost my dad to this disease before he ever got to meet my two great boys (although one has taken up snowboarding, so maybe he isn’t as great as I thought). However, I would like to add another name to your shirt. Monica is the wife of one of my team members at work. She’s been fighting this disease for 20+ years and has faced some really touch challenges over the last few months.
Like your passion is gardening (of course after all other winter based activities), her passion is photography. I will mail you a book she co-authored . . . “Each Moment We’re Alive”. It’s photos she took set to lyrics (CD included) which focuses on the hope.
I’ll also send in a donation in Nancy’s name and wish you and Stevie the best of luck at the Triathlon.
If you have the swim event at West Lake next year, I’d be glad to take over that leg.
Vince – Monica is on the shirt. I would love to see her book – great title. Let me understand this – you will sit for hours in the freezing cold for 1st chair but you won’t swim in Snow Lake? Chicken! And as for your son, you talk a good game but I know secretly you are tickled pink that one of your boys is a snowboarder – I know we love our freestyler! What is your dad’s name? He has to be on the shirt too. Good stuff Vince – thanks!
Thanks Kelly. My dad’s name is Larry. It’s Adam’s middle name. And yes, I am actually delighted that my boys love winter sports. Regarding snowboarding, you will recognize my car in the parking lot next season . . . The license plate says 2PLNKR. I will mail the book this week. It’s very inspiring.
Happy to add Larry to the shirt. Too bad you couldn’t get one of those VT Strong plates with 2PLNKR. Very you! And thank you in advance for use of the book.
Dennis Butchko, a very dear friend of mine and Mount Snow died of cancer this year. Please add his name to your shirt. Thanks for all you do for the community and Mount Snow.
Fred – Dennis was a fellow Rotarian and we miss him. He’s on my shirt! Thank you.
Where can I send a donation? I would love to have my dads’ name added as well LES… gone now to cancer…. I miss him so much…he was the toughest strongest man I know, yet cancer was tougher….
Debbie – your dad sounds like a great guy – I am honored to add him to the shirt.
For donations, I used the link at the top of this post (http://www.triforhope.com/).
Kelly, it would be great if you could post a picture of your shirt with the names on it (especially before you jump into Snow Lake)
Tou got it Vince – I will post another picture when we get closer.
Sadly, Monica passed away Thursday night. I attended the funeral today. However, they were very honored to have her name on your shirt. Thanks Kelly.
I am very sorry to hear that, Vince. We all need to live more by her words “Each Moment We’re Alive”.
You’ll have your copy soon . . . a little delayed. And Thank You Kel.
Kel – it’s my 4th yr too and LOVE every minute of this event, the challenge, the people and of course the FINISH LINE. Now with the added fundraising component to help fight the fight of this horrible disease, I am especially excited to be a participant. I would be honoured if you could add my sister (Debbie) and my mother (Patty) to your shirt of memory. I am sure their angelic wings will carry me up the dreaded Exhibition switchback this year!!! May even pass you for a change…..lol
Denise – come on down to my office – I want youo to write their names on the shirt! We’ll see what happens on the Ex switchback – not cutting corners!
I am truly honored Kelly…. I will always be a part and cherish my Mt Snow family – the support and love of my fellow coaches and instructors while going through cancer treatment was incredible. The strength and love of community supporting the fight against cancer through the triathlon & the Ski for Hope Day during the season. I remember that year so well – how tough it was coming off of treatment and having you all there smiling and supporting me. Thank you for all you do and for this tribute!
my family has grown up at Mount Snow and you were there when my husband, Jack died of pancreatic cancer. This will be my third Mount Snow Tri and glad to be tri-ing for hope!! Please put Jack on the shirt and my Mom who died of breast cancer….and please put two of my daughters and former mountain campers/riders!! in honor of being previvors, Heather and Hannah..see you on the mountain!!
Sounds great. Terrific event. This will be my third year participating. Curious if all we need to do is sign up at the triforhope link. I didn’t see a registration fee, etc. Thanks
Awesome idea Kelly. I will be wearing the names of 2 survivors – Bill my brother and Lisa my sister in law who just past 5 years cancer free.
@ Nancy – it is easy to smile when we see you. Everyone is so proud of our strength! @ Lynne – Wow – your family knows this story all too well. I will wear Jack, Heather and Hannah’s names proudly on my shirt. Could you also give me your mom’s name? @ TMPCT – the registration fee is $125 and they send you a little card letting you know that over $100 of that is tax deductible – yes, sign up with the link provided. @ Muenkel – yes…..so psyched to do the tri with you. I will put Bill and Lisa on my shirt too!!!
A huge thank you to Vince, Don and DRM. Your donations are greatly appreciated and I plan on swimming and running my tail off for you on the 11th. And then toasting you with my favorite adult beverage!
Kelly
This past winter I lost my mom “Pat” to pancreatic cancer. It was New Years Eve and I was with my Mount Snow Family when I received the news that she was not going to make it. 19 days later she passed away. The support that we have for each other in this community is amazing.
Keep running and swimming. I know Stevie will have your back on the bike.
Mike – very sorry to hear that. Pat is on my shirt and I am very happy to have her on my side! Your right – Stevie is a non-stop biking machine! And thank you very much for your donation. I am amazed at everyone’s generosity.
Hi Kelly,
Where and when will there be more information about starting time on Saturday and where to park etc.? I’m doing tthis for the first time (and my very first Triathlon!) and the main reason I decided to do it is because of the partnership with Relay for Life and ACS. Gave me a reason to enter this event. See you on Saturday (and be kind to me, both swimming and running – even though I expect you to just take off and I won’t see you until I cross the finish line).
Minna
Hi Minna, the events page mountsnow.com/events has updated information with start times, etc.
Thanks Dan! I assume this is a rain or shine event… even with the lovely (NOT) forecast they have for Saturday.
Yep, rain or shine! You’re going to get wet anyway :)
Tx Kel, can’t wait to see those new techniques in action!!!! For me this is my 4th Mount Snow tri and I can definitively say “I AM HOOKED” …Its not just the thrill and adrenaline rush of competition but the unique & special bonds that are formed along the way. Each week I am challenged and inspired to train in all three events with community members such as Kelly, Ani, Tom, Crista Gannon, Jim & D.Rice. Along with hours of support from my dedicated swim dog, Ollie and favorite bike buddies who ride the distance.
Together these folks have given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way. See you on race day!!! d
Hi Minna – Glad you are doing it! Stevie and I usually get there by 7 am to register and have time to stretch, gab, etc. I park right in the parking lot across from the lake – Lot E. See you Saturday.
Thank you to those who are registered for the Mount Snow Tri for Hope! We are very much looking forward to the event tomorrow and hope you are, too. The following are just a few reminders regarding registration and schedules to help you better plan for the morning:
- Registration will be open from 6:00am to 7:15am and will take place in Mount Snow’s E Lot, which is located off of Handle Rd across from Snow Lake and next to the transition area. There will be signage directing you to the registration location which will be under a few pop-up tents so you can’t miss it.
- If you have an annual USA Triathlon license please be sure to have that with you to present upon arrival.
- If you do not have an annual USA Triathlon license you will need to purchase a one-day license for $12.
- If you are paying upon arrival we will accept cash or checks only and checks can be made out to The American Cancer Society.
- The first heat of the race will start at 8:00am, so please be ready to go before then as there will be no late starts.
We have a great course for you to enjoy, so the race is sure to be very exciting to take part in. But the most exciting part of the day will be when we present the check to The American Cancer Society from the money raised thanks to your efforts. Thank you for being a part of this great event and for helping fight the battle against cancer!
Sincerely,
The Mount Snow Team
Good luck to everyone today. You are doing this for a wonderful cause.
I’m not being critical…really… but the picture of the Blue Brook road garden does not do it justice at all. It is so much nicer than the picture.
Thanks to my awesome teammate, Stevie. Thanks to everyone who donated – we raised $24k!!!! Thanks to the marketing team who put together a very nice event. Thanks to the participants – it was fun competing with you. And thanks to all the cheerleaders. Your applause and signs are the encouragement we need to go a little faster and you always remind me to smile. I loved running with my shirt full of cancer survivors and those we have lost. It was a real boost for me on the run. When you run you have plenty of time to think and it was a reality check for me. I am looking forward to next year. I will post pictures later when I find my camera – hum, wonder where I put that?
Wow – contributions to my fundraising campaigne are still coming in even after the event. The relay.aceevents.org site was super easy to use and I love the follow up it provides: http://relay.acsevents.org/site/TR/CommunityFundraisingPages/RFLFY12NE?fr_id=46900&pg=entry
Thank you for hosting the Tri for Hope and thank you to all those who made a difference to help Kick Cancer’s Butt !
