Wait and See
When I had my babies I did not find out their sex before giving birth. I’m a “wait and see” kind of gal and love a good surprise. I’m not going to lie; I have been snooping around the extended forecasts, looking for confirmation of A BIG SNOW WINTER. I’ve looked at the charts, trends, OLRs, NOAs, OAs and sunspots and all I can really tell you, is that is too early to tell. It is fun to speculate but we are going to have to wait and see.
Most forecasters are confirming an El Nino and the possibility of a weak El Nino bringing more precipitation to the East Coast. The white precip, right? Lacking a solid forecast I turn to the power of positive thinking, something skiers are very good at. If I had a dollar for every time I would see one of you on the hill last year and you’d say something like, “Did you see the forecast – snow next week!” And I was right there with you, holding out for the mega storm.
I like to see the positive side of things and I like to look at problems as a chance to improve the current situation. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t snort rainbows 24-7. I can be as cynical as the next. And while I step into “whiny Kelly” for a moment, can I say that the number of inspiration posts on facebook is starting to have the reverse effect on me. They are supposed to give me a lift and now every time I see one I think, “I know, I know – stop reminding me!”
Sorry for the detour – had to get that off my chest.
With little meteorological science to rely on, I am going with my gut when I say that I am confident that we are headed into a snowy VT winter. We certainly deserve a good winter after enduring Irene and one of the weirdest seasons on record. Last season, our largest single-day dump was 15” on Oct 29. On February 29 – March 3 we received 22” over the 4 days. The cruel thing about the October snowstorm is that it set optimists up for, what we believed would be, an amazing year. We ended the season with tropical weather and 100 inches total snowfall, about 45 inches below a “normal” year.
Believe it or not, last year wasn’t Mount Snow’s lowest snowfall on record. In 1979-80, 97 inches was recorded. I was also able to find a rebound trend that was kind of interesting. I looked at the lowest snowfall years on record and the year following.
1991-92 102”
1992-93 234” (most on record dating back to 77-78)
1994-95 116.5”
1995-96 222”
1999-00 137.5”
2000-01 224”
So let’s hear it for those good ole’ Southern Vermont Mother Nature rebounds and set our sights on 200+ inches of fabulous, powdery, mind-boggling snow, this year. If you have any top-secret weather intel or predictions, please share. Me, I am just going to kick back and wait and see.

We need enough snow so Vince can build the 20013 version of the Snow Bar in its brand new location. He was really sad last year that the Bar could not be built. If Vince is happy I think one way or another everyone will be happy!
Mike – is it still over at Ski Baba?
At least one thing is certain for September: Brewers Festival is going to be a great time. And at this point, wonderful weather as well! See you this weekend.
Kelly,
From what I understand the Snow Bar will be located about a mile south of the mountain this year. I am sure the Proprietor will make some sort of official announcement soon. Think about the good news, you will not have to worry about the grooming and or snow making crews being bribed into providing Vince with a little snow.
See you on Saturday!
For clarification:
1. Location of the new SnowBar will be finalized this week.
2. I never bribed any snowmaking/grooming/maintenance crews. I just invited them over for breakfast.
Vince, any updates on the location of the Snow Bar?
We moved off slopeside just down the mountain. Village on the Deerfield. Just a little south of the Last Chair on 100. Opening date, maybe mid-November (with our without snow).
Any new improvements for the upcoming season this year?
Well according to the acorn theory we should have a very good year. They are falling early and fast. (the heavier the acorn count the better the winter).
Dave – after the install of the Bluebird Express and a poor winter, we don’t have much capital investment this summer. We are doing lots of maintenance projects that you probably won’t notice (roofs, flooring, painting, snow making pipe, etc.) I am not sure if you are a mountain biker but there has been a lot of work this summer on our downhill trails and terrain – good stuff!
It’s not just the snowfall that matters but also what happens when it’s not snowing. What’s the temperature? Will there be any rain? An inch of rain on the back end of a 12″ snow storm can pretty much ruin it. So can a week of temperatures in the 50s. I hope we get a winter with 200″ of snow. But I also hope it stays cold and doesn’t rain.
I agree Seth!
Can somebody please elaborate on what the Snow Bar is?
Love the sound of it…
Newbie, one of our passholders, Vince (see below) has built a bar out of snow on his deck. it’s not a public bar or business… just FYI :)
I feel a true monster coming this year. Mostly all snow. I also feel temps quite cold. It is going to be a good one. That said, don’t miss your opportunities. Skiing the mountain Oct 30th last year was great. PS, huge props to those kids that hiked the hill in their ski boots. That was AWESOME.
Hi! How come the Live Cam at the Summit doesn’t show the fall folliage. It’s been the same picture for awhile now. Need some colorful inspiration for this coming weekend!
Geneen, The summit cam has been down, but we’re hoping to get it running again in the next day or two. Thanks
